Operations at Anniston’s chemical weapons incinerator were set to resume as early as Friday night or this morning, according to incinerator managers.

The incinerator was shut down as Tropical Storm Ivan approached. After the storm passed, an assessment of the grounds found no damage, plant officials said in a news release.

“We are all very thankful no one was injured at the site or in the area,” said Tim Garrett, the site manager. “I am personally impressed with the dedication and the professionalism of the site team members who stayed on duty through Ivan to ensure the safety of the community and the environment just in case there had been an emergency situation.”

The assessment included a thorough inspection of the incinerator grounds, including the chemical agent monitors around the perimeter.

The incinerator itself was designed and built to stand up to the strongest tornado, according to officials.
