After a two-month delay, a personal protective equipment distribution center is open again in Calhoun County.

The new location for the distribution center is in the Metro Mail and Printing building at 105 D Street in Anniston.

The office opened Thursday, Emergency Management Agency Director Dan Long said, but the center had been distributing equipment unofficially since July.

People who want to get air filters, shelter-in-place kits or information on what to do in case of an incident at Anniston's chemical weapons incinerator can call the EMA at 435-0540 or visit the Metro Mail office from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Mondays through Fridays.

Metro Mail employee Patricia Surret said people can arrange with the center to pick up equipment after hours.

Everyone who gets the equipment is required to sit through a 45-minute training session, she said.

People who want protective hoods must clear it with Dr. Kishin Gehi, but the EMA covers the cost of the visit.

"We keep 20 boxes of personal protective equipment on hand," Surret said. The EMA delivers more equipment to the center as needed.

Since the center unofficially began distributing the equipment in July, it has distributed three air filters, three shelter-in-place kits and 12 medical information forms.

Long said the contract with Metro Mail will cost the county $6,500 per month.
