Contract
details delay opening of new CSEPP center

The need to complete contract details has delayed the opening of a new
center to distribute protective equipment to residents for use in case of an
accident at Anniston's chemical weapons incinerator.
Officials at the
Calhoun County Emergency Management Agency said the Chemical Stockpile
Emergency Preparedness Plan (CSEPP) distribution center will open "soon,"
though a date has not been set.
The center,
formerly on Wilmer Avenue, closed when the county's contract with Centech
expired on May 1.
When the new center
opens, it will be at Metro Mail and Printing's office at 105 D Street in
Anniston.
County EMA Director
Daniel Long previously told the Calhoun County Commission that the new center
would open by the end of June.
Residents still can
get CSEPP equipment directly from the EMA office at 507 Francis Street West in
Jacksonville.
"The citizens
are still being taken care of," Long said. "The center is getting
ready to open. I've just got to get the details."
The details are
included in a contract with Metro Mail that is under review, county attorney
Tom Sowa said.
"The contract
has been shipped to the law firm, Bradley, Arant, Rose and White," Sowa
said. "Certain clauses are required due to the source of funding (FEMA
money)."
Long said an opening
date for the new center depends on when lawyers finish vetting the contract. "I
was hoping to be open before now, to be honest with you," Long said.
