The Army says its chemical weapons incinerator at the Anniston Army
Depot resumed operations Monday morning.
According to facility managers, workers are now destroying GB-filled eight-inch
artillery shells.
Disposal operations were temporarily stopped June first after the last of
the 155 millimeter projectiles were processed. Employees spent about three
weeks conducting maintenance and retooling the incinerator to process the
eight-inch and 105 millimeter shells.
The Army expects to wrap up the G-B disposal campaign by the end of the year.
Since August 2003, more than 66,000 chemical weapons have been safely destroyed
at the site. An international treaty sets a 2012 deadline for destruction
of the country's stockpile of chemical weapons.
