Chemical Weapons Samples delivered to Maryland

The Pine Bluff Arsenal announced Monday that small samples of a chemical-weapons agent from the facility were safely delivered Saturday to a military facility in Maryland.

The Army says the samples, amounting to less than half a cup, will be analyzed at Aberdeen Proving Ground to help determine safe disposal options for one-ton containers of GB agent at the arsenal.

The samples were taken by Army helicopter to a Pine Bluff airport, transferred to an Army aircraft and flown to Maryland. Soldiers from the U.S. Army 22nd Chemical Battalion accompanied the shipment.

Incineration of the chemical weapons stockpile at the arsenal began in March 2005 in accordance with an international treaty.
