WHAT'S HAPPENING: The Pentagon released more than $70 million to continue designing and building facilities to destroy chemical weapons stockpiles at the Blue Grass Army Depot and Pueblo Chemical Depot.
WHAT'S AT STAKE: The United States has about 24,000 tons of chemical weapons remaining in stockpiles in eight states. Under an international treaty, the Defense Department is required to destroy all of them by 2012, but critics say more money must be allocated to meet that deadline.
THE RESPONSE: Lawmakers and advocates for the destruction program the funding is inadequate. They are also trying to stop the Defense Department from studying whether it would be cheaper to move weapons to other destruction sites.
