Pine Bluff, AR (AP) - The Pine Bluff Arsenal safely disposed of its third chemical weapon Wednesday morning at 11:00 as it embarked on its second day of incineration. A third M-55 rocket with sarin nerve gas inside was destroyed in a carefully monitored and complex system that began operations Tuesday.

The plan had been to process another 27 rockets Wednesday, but arsenal spokeswoman Raini Wright said it appeared only about six would be destroyed before the day is done. She said it would not be possible to determine exactly how many rockets were fully incinerated until Wednesday morning.

As of 3 p.m. Wednesday, she said four rockets had passed over a series of conveyor belts and into furnaces -- in addition to the two processed Tuesday. Wright said that unlike Tuesday, when a hose used to cool down heated material had a leak, there were no repairs necessary Wednesday. She said the delays Wednesday were simply adjustments and checks of instruments while the arsenal workers get used to the process. Eventually, they plan to destroy about 30 rockets an hour.
