During race, weapons won't move THE ASSOCIATED PRESS TALLADEGA, Ala. - The Army will not move chemical weapons at its Anniston incinerator during activities at Talladega Superspeedway this weekend, according to an agreement between county and incinerator officials. Chemical weapons storage igloos also will not be open from midnight Thursday through midnight Sunday, a period when some 200,000 racing fans are expected at the speedway, which is about 12 miles from the incinerator. The agreement came after local emergency management officials asked the Army to address the issue of protecting race-week crowds. Army site manager Tim Garrett said transportation of munitions likely will not resume until Monday around 7 a.m. However, chemical weapons destruction will continue at its current rate of about 16 rockets per hour during the races. Talladega County Emergency Management Agency director Nelson Bates said the incinerator should pose no threat to race-goers. "Go enjoy the race, and don't worry about the incinerator," he said. |
