Personnel at the Pine Bluff Arsenal will be conducting
a controlled foliage burn today on the installation, officials said.
The burn should start about 9 a.m. and be finished
by early afternoon, but officials said the resulting smoke might be visible
for days.
The arsenal is home to 12 percent of the Army’s
chemical weapon stockpile and has stored nerve and blister agents for 60
years.
On Wednesday, the arsenal’s Chemical Agent Disposal Facility marked its first anniversary. To date, the facility has processed 34,207 rockets and 352,872 pounds of the nerve agent GB.
